Corrosion
cor·ro·sion
/kəˈrōZHən/
• Corrosion is the deterioration
and loss of a material and its
critical properties due to
chemical, electrochemical and
other reactions of the exposed
material surface with the
surrounding environment.

Uniform Corrosion

• Uniform corrosion is
characterized by corrosive
attack proceeding evenly over
the entire surface area, or a
large fraction of the total area.
On the basis of tonnage
wasted, this is the most
important form of corrosion.

What causes • The anodic reaction in the corrosion
process is always the oxidation
uniform reaction:

corrosion?
M = M+ + e (1)
• In acidic environments, i.e.,
pH<7, the cathodic process • In alkaline or neutral environment, i.e.,
is mainly the reduction of pH=7 or pH>7, reduction of dissolved
hydrogen ions: oxygen is the predominant cathodic
process that causes uniform corrosion:

2H+ + 2e = H2 (2) O2 + 2H2O + 4e = 4OH-

How to Methods:

prevent  Use thicker materials for corrosion

uniform allowance
 Use paints or metallic coatings
corrosion? such as plating, galvanizing or
anodizing
 Use Corrosion inhibitors or
modifying the environment
 Cathodic protection (Sacrificial
Anode or Impressed Current -
ICCP) and Anodic Protection
