 In most of the industrial application, the DC motor is
obtained found to be the most important equipment.
 Sometimes it required to control the speed of dc motor
manually.
 The wired connection of the DC motor for the speed
control may not be possible in some places.
 The GSM technology is a very good method to
implement a wireless speed control system for the DC
motor.
 Other wireless control method like Bluetooth, infrared
and radio remote control method etc.
 We have been able to implement a system which is able
to control the speed of the DC motor using an SMS.
INTRODUCTION

 During the present days technology is all about the automation

and wireless control of all the equipment used in industries,
factories and households.
 Any equipment that can be controlled wirelessly is more easily
maintained and it responds very fast comparing to the manual
operation of the equipment.
 It increases safety as well as speed of operation in times of failure
or damage. So here we present a design which uses wireless
technology for switching of electrical appliances.
 This project uses the application of wireless communication i,e.
GSM network for the wireless control of the electrical appliances.
 In this project the applications of GSM network for the design of a
circuit to control the DC motor is shown, and also the design of the
circuit and method to construct the system using GSM modem and
Arudino microcontroller is explained.
INTRODUCTION
5

 Various uses and limitations of the system are being briefed.

 Today’s industries are increasingly demanding process automation
in all sectors.
 Automation results into better quality, increased production an
reduced costs. The variable speed drives, which can control the
speed of A.C/D.C motors, are indispensable controlling elements in
automation systems.
 Depending on the applications, some of them are fixed speed and
some of the variable speed drives.
 Our project presents a speed control of DC motor by using SMS
through a GSM based on Arduino Uno.
6 Motivation

 As a reason of drastic developments in the field of wireless

communications these days, the applications of this
technology can be used in various sectors for making daily
tasks comfortable and easy.
 One such application can be used for control of electrical
appliances which results in effective and efficient use of
electrical power reducing the loss.
 This area has yet to be explored in major parts of the world.
So we would like to take this opportunity to put forward a
cost effective method for the wireless switching of the DC
motor.
7 Objectives
 The main aim of the design provided in this project is to
develop a device to have wireless control of DC motor using
SMS from a GSM device.
 The device can be made sure to be available at a low cost so
that everyone can afford it.
 This is basically a device built for industry control system that
can provide remote access to electrical appliances at low
cost and in efficient way.
 The motors connected in the industry consume a lot of
electrical power, and there is an absolute necessity of saving
of power as per present day situations.
 So it is necessary to control electrical devices more effectively
and efficiently at anytime from anywhere. So this project is built
for the sole purpose of efficient control of electrical appliances
specifically the DC motor.
8 DC Motor
 Speed control means intentional change of drive speed to a value
required for performing the specific work process. This concept of
speed control or adjustment should not be taken to include the
natural change in speed which occurs due to change in the load
on the shaft.
 The electrical speed control has many economical as well as
engineering advantages over mechanical speed control
 The nature of the speed control requirement for an industrial drive
depends upon its type.
 Some drives may require continues variation of speed for the whole
of the range from zero to full speed or over a portion of this range ,
while the others may require two or more fixed speeds
9 DC Motor
 DC motors are classified into three types depending upon the way
their field windings are excited.
 1) Series Motor
 2) Shunt Motor
 3) Compound Motor

 Various Speed control Methods

 SPEED CONTROL OF SHUNT MOTOR
 FLUX CONTROL METHOD:
 ARMATURE OR RHEOSTAT CONTROL METHOD
 VOLTAGE CONTROL METHOD:
10 DC Motor
 VARIOUS SWITCHING DEVICES

 Today’s power semiconductor devices are almost exclusively based
on silicon material and can be classified as follows:
 • Diode
 • Thyristor or silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR)
 •Bipolar junction transistor (BJT)
 • Power MOSFET
11 PWM Technique
 Principle
 Pulse width modulation control works by switching the power
supplied to the motor on and off very rapidly. The DC voltage is
converted to a square wave signal, alternating between fully on
(nearly 12v) and zero, giving the motor a series of power “kicks”.
 Pulse width modulation technique (PWM) is a technique for speed
control which can overcome the problem of poor starting
performance of a motor.
 PWM for motor speed control works in a very similar way. Instead of
supplying a varying voltage to a motor, it is supplied with a fixed
voltage value (such as 12v) which starts it spinning immediately. The
voltage is then removed and the motor ‘coasts’. By continuing
this voltage on/off cycle with a varying duty cycle, the motor speed
can be controlled.
12 PWM Technique
 The pwm signals can be generated in a number of ways. There are
several methods:
 analogue method
 digital method
 discrete IC
 On board micro controller

 VOLTAGE REGULATOR:

 The LM 78XXX series of the three terminal regulations is available with

several fixed output voltages making them useful in a wide range of
applications. One of these is local on card regulation. The voltages
available allow these regulators to be used in logic systems,
instrumentation and other solid state electronic equipment.

 MOTOR DRIVER:
 The purpose of a motor speed controller is to take a signal
representing the demanded speed, and to drive a motor at that
speed. The controller may or may not actually measure the speed of
the motor. If it does, it is called a Feedback Speed Controller or
Closed Loop Speed Controller, if not it is called an Open Loop Speed
Controller. Feedback speed control is better, but more complicated,
and may not be required for a simple robot design.
17 MAIN COMPONENTS

LCD screen consists of two lines with 16 characters each. Each character consists
of 5x7 dot matrix. Contrast on display depends on the power supply voltage and
whether messages are displayed in one or two lines. For that reason, variable
voltage 0-Vdd is applied on pin marked as Vee. Trimmer potentiometer is usually
used for that purpose. Some versions of displays have built in backlight (blue or
green diodes). When used during operating, a resistor for current limitation should
be used (like with any LE diode).

 The Arduino UNO is an open-source microcontroller board based on

the Microchip ATmega328P microcontroller and developed
by Arduino.cc. The board is equipped with sets of digital and analog
input/output (I/O) pins that may be interfaced to various expansion
boards (shields) and other circuits. The board has 14 Digital pins, 6
Analog pins, and programmable with the Arduino IDE (Integrated
Development Environment) via a type B USB cable. It can be
powered by a USB cable or by an external 9 volt battery, though it
accepts voltages between 7 and 20 volts. It is also similar to the
Arduino Nano and Leonardo.
MAIN COMPONENTS

 GSM is a global system for mobile communication GSM is an international

digital cellular telecommunication.
 The main feature of GSM technology is that is provides the mobility to user.
 By expanding the GSM network, different type of services are introduced such as
SMS, MMS, and Data etc.
 On the basis of limitation of frequencies the GSM network has known as GSM
300, GSM 800 and GSM 900.
 By using AT's command we can send and receive SMS through the
microcontroller.

Working
22

 The project basically consists of Arudino Uno as a microcontroller and

motor driver, thermal sensor, comparator, key pad,16X2 dot matrix
LCD display and rotation feedback sensor (optical encoder).
 Initially the motor runs at the rated speed .When the user want to
change the speed of the motor to the desired speed , the user will
forward the SMS which specifies the speed at which the user want the
motor to be operated..
 The motor is rotated at X RPM speed, can be detected by using
feedback sensor and micro controller.
 If the desired speed to be achieved is above the speed at which the
motor is running then the micro controller continuously increases the
duty cycle till the speed comes to a desired level.
 If the desired speed to be achieved is below the speed at which the
motor is running then the micro controller continuously decreases the
duty cycle till the speed comes to a desired level .
