Malware, from the words
malicious and software, is
a software designed to
infiltrate or damage a
computer system without
the owner's informed
consent .It includes
spyware, adware,
computer worms and
trojan horses.
A Bomb is a computer
virus which activates
themselves after a
specified time and harm
the computer.
Boot sector is a partition
of hard disk that store
start-up information. Boot
Sector virus causes
damage to this area.
An E-mail Virus transmits
through e-mails and the
attached files. The person
opening the e-mail and
downloading the
attachments also,
unknowingly, copies the
virus onto his own
computer.
A Trojan, is malware
that appears to
perform a desirable
function but in fact
performs undisclosed
malicious functions.
Generally, they steal
information from the
computer.
Computer Worm is a self-
replicating computer
program. They use up all
the disk space making
computer very slow.
Spyware is computer
software that is installed
secretly on a personal
computer to intercept or
take partial control over
the user's interaction with
the computer, without the
user's informed consent.
Signs of viruses:
Operating System may slow
down.
Change the length of executable
(*.com/*.exe) files.
Change to the reassignment of
system resources.
Showing some funny and
suspicious behaviour (blinking of
the mouse).
Do not receive a CD or a USB from another person
before checking that his system is virus free.

Different Antivirus software use different user
interfaces thus there is not straight forward method
of using an antivirus. However, the antivirus software
are ,generally, quite easy to use.
There are two types of methods available to use an
antivirus software:-
1. Automatic Scan
2. Manual Scan
To do an automatic scan these are the general steps
to be followed:-
Step 1. Open the Antivirus software(by double-clicking
the icon on desktop or through start menu).
Step 2. Click “Scan” or “Scan now” or “Scan my PC”
or any similar looking option.(Different software use
different option names but the functions are same
and they are easy to identify.)
Step 3. The scanning process will start and will
continue automatically.
Step 4. Upon completion of process the software will
notify any potential threats, if none present then it
will simply say “Scan Complete”.
Step 5. Close the antivirus application.
To do an Manual scan these are the general steps to be
followed(This type of scan is generally done for external
devices):-
Step 1. Open the Antivirus software(by double-clicking the
icon on desktop or through start menu).
Step 2. Click “New scan” or “Custom scan” or similar
option.
Step 3. Select the specific folder or drive or external
device to scan.
Step . The scanning process will start and will continue
automatically.
Step . Upon completion of process the software will notify
any potential threats, if none present then it will simply
say “Scan Complete”.
Step . Close the antivirus application.
New types of Viruses are constantly being created and to
protect your computer from these viruses it is necessary to
keep the antivirus updated.
