WHAT IS HYDRO POWER ?

• Hydropower, or hydro energy, is a form of

renewable energy that uses the water stored in dams,
as well as flowing in rivers to create electricity in
hydropower plants. The rotating blades spin a
generator that converts the mechanical energy of the
spinning turbine into electrical energy.
Generating methods

• Conventional (dams)
• Pumped-storage
• Run-of-the-river

WORKING OF HYDRO POWER PLANT
Transmitting power
CLASSIFICATION OF HYDRO
ELECTRIC POWER PLANT
• Low head hydroelectric power plants
Low head power plant: Head of the water range
from to 1.5 to 80 meters, the turbine used in
such plant is Kaplan turbine.
•Medium head hydroelectric power plants
Medium head power plant: Head of the water range
from to 80 to 500 meters, the turbine used in such
plant is Francis turbine
•High head hydroelectric power plants
High head power plant: Head of the water range from to
more to 800 meters, the turbine used in such plant is
peloton turbine
Advantages
• Water is a renewable energy source.
• Maintenance and operation charges are very
low.
• The efficiency of the plant does not change.
• In addition to power generation, hydroelectric
power plants are also useful for flood control,
irrigation purposes and recreation.
Disadvantages

• The initial cost of the plant is very high.

• Since they are located far away the load centre,
cost of transmission lines and transmission
losses will be more.
• During drought season the power production
may be reduced or even stopped due to
insufficient water in the reservoir.
CONCLUSION

• . Hydro power plants annually generate more

power with high efficiency.
• To improve the stability and reliability of the
smart grid, it is required to interconnect other
sources such as diesel, wind and battery etc.
