Introduction
• Heat is a form of energy that can be transferred from
one object to another or even created at the expense of
the loss of other forms of energy.
• The heat transfer can be defined as rates of such energy
transfer in area.
• This project will bring out application of method of
heat transfer in our daily.
Introduction (cont.)
• The process that the student will investigate is the
process of drying a piece of coverall under direct
sunlight.
• This project will show the application and how heat
transfer through conduction, convection and radiation
are use to dry the coverall.
Definition
Conduction
• Thermal Conduction is the movement of heat from one
solid to another one that has different temperature
when they are touching each other.

Convection
• Convection is transfer of heat from one place to
another by the movement of fluids.
• Types of Heat Convection
• Natural Convection
• Forced Convection
Definition
• Types of Heat Convection
• Natural Convection
-the tendency of most fluids to expand when heated to
become less dense and to rise as a result of the increased
buoyancy.
• Forced Convection
-involves the transport of fluid by methods other than that
resulting from variation of density with temperature.

Radiation
• Heat Radiation is the transfer of internal energy in the form of
electromagnetic waves.
• Radiation is a method of heat transfer that does not rely upon
any contact between the heat source and the heated object

Project Procedure

Material and Equipment Used:

• A Piece of Coverall
• A Bucket of Tap Water
• Clothes Hanger
Project Procedure
Project Result
• After the student carry out the experiment, the coverall
was dry fully after 3 hours subjected under direct
sunlight at the hostel.
• The temperature was 34°C on the day of the
experiment.
• The was a quick breeze of wind and the clear sky was
clear on the day of the experiment with minimal sign of
clouds.
Project Result (cont.)
Project Discussion
• Three different mode of heat transfer present in this
experiment
• Conduction
• Convection
• Radiation
Project Discussion (cont.)
Radiation
• Every day, the hydrogen in the sun is converted into helium
through millions and millions of chemical reactions.
• The by-product of this reaction is Heat.
• The heat from the sun was transfer to earth via thermal
radiation.
• This causes the temperature to raise when the sun is present.
Project Discussion (cont.)
Convection
• The heat was transfer from the surrounding area to the wet coverall
by convection due to the present of temperature difference.
• This increase of temperature will cause the water molecule in the
wet clothes to evaporate.
• Evaporation is the change of water from a liquid to a gas
• Water vapor is heated becomes less dense, and as a result, it rises.
• This phenomenon is called Natural Convection.
Project Discussion (cont.)
The Figure shows
• The heat were transfer from the
surrounding area to the wet
coverall by convection due to the
present of temperature
difference.
Project Discussion (cont.)
Convection
• During the experiment, the wind blows strong.
• Air flow will only speed up evaporation, thus making the
coverall dry faster.
• This will cause a forced convection to occurs.
• The harder the air is blow across the coverall, the faster it will
dry.
Project Discussion (cont.)
Conduction
• The heat is transfer by conduction from one water molecule to
the other.
• The heat is transfer to all the surface area of the overall by
conduction from the other water molecule and convection
from the difference temperature of the surrounding area.
• This increase of temperature will cause the water molecule in
the wet clothes to evaporate.
Project Discussion (cont.)

The figure shows :

• The heat is transfer by conduction from

the other water molecule and convection
Heat (Conduction) from the difference temperature of the
surrounding area and the coverall.
• The heat is transfer by conduction from
Water Water one water molecule to the other.
Molecule Molecule
Project Conclusion
• The coverall will dry the fastest when hung up outdoors in a
dry, sunny, hot, windy climate due to the present of all the
mode of heat transfer.
• The high temperature difference between the surface of the
wet clothes and the surrounding will speed up the heat transfer
and will make the coverall dry faster.
• Demonstration with drying a wet have allowed the student to
see the obvious physical changes and studies the method of
heat transfer present during the drying process.
