use of Technology to research information and discuss
findings using conversation skills with student?

Context of action research (500
words)
• X Public School is located in Western Sydney
• Multicultural, social middle working class community
• X Public School has 350 student enrollments
– 10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
– 340 students – mixture of Arabic, Turkish, Hindu background
– Mostly speaking English as a second language (ESL)
• Stage 3 Year 6 classroom
– 28 students
– 10% above stage achievement level
– 60% at the stage achievement level
– 30% below stage level
– Transient, culturally, linguistically and academically diverse cohort
Focus of Action Research
• Practicum experiences: the use of technology in student learning is limited
• Mentor introduced ‘Accountable talk’ skills
• Shift in my research focus: use technology and include accountable talk skills into research
and discussions to engage and extend knowledge
• Empowering students through accountable talk skills:
– Elaborate and Clarify
– Support Ideas with Examples
– Build On ideas
– Challenge Ideas
– Synthesize through discussion
• Connection between the action research and the MeE Framework
– School and teacher mission
– self-regulated learning
– Impact of short term and long term implications to education
• Connection between the action research and teaching philosophy
– Student centred learning
– Self directed learning
– Discovery and inquiry based learning
Collection and use of student data in
professional self-reflection (250 words)
• Ethics
• Observational data
• Records of conversations
• Work samples
• Student self assessment

• Report on the collection of four kinds of data (What data did you collect, when, where, and how).
• Explain how you used the data to evaluate the quality of students’ learning (engagement / achievement),
• evaluate your teaching practice and demonstrate the significance of the implemented pedagogic changes.

Hint:
• Refine and use material from your Action Plan, where you outlined your intentions for the use of student
data (how data will be interpreted to evaluate and critically reflect on the impact of the planned pedagogic
changes).
• When you write up this section, make sure that you follow your marking tutor’s feedback on your Action
plan.
• The general feedback file for the cohort also contains valuable information.
Key Findings - Overview
Key findings (1000 words )
This is the most important section, demonstrating your analysis of data to address your
question. In this section you will discuss the key findings of the analysis and illustrate
the discussion with annotated data samples. The discussion of these key findings
provides an answer to your research question.

Advice:
• Revisit Tutorial content, where we talked about the collection and analysis of the
FOUR types of data, for the purposes of the research report.
• Whilst you are analysing your data, develop analytic strategies, for example
systematic annotation (this can be colour coded)
• What do you need to focus on in your analysis to explore the quality of students’
learning?
– annotate the student data to reflect on students’ performance/achievement,
making links to syllabus outcomes
– annotate the student data to show how they document student engagement
(based on the MeE).
• 250 words per data type. 2-3 examples of each data type.

Records of Conversations
Short- and long-term implications
(250 words)
• See general feedback on the Action Plan for
support.
References (not included in word
count)
Appendix (not included in word
count)
• Restrict your appendix for the presentation of evidence on
focus group participation.
• You should also use the appendix to show relevant consent
forms (anonymised!)
– Children/teacher cannot be identified
– School may also need to be de-identified.
• Present all your selected data (and their analysis) in the main
body of your report.
