‡ The European Ecolabel is a voluntary scheme,

established in 1992 to encourage businesses to
market products and services that are kinder to the
environment.
‡ Products and services awarded the Ecolabel carry
the flower logo, allowing consumers including public
and private purchasers to identify them easily.
‡ While the logo may be simple, the environmental
criteria behind it are tough, and only the very best
products, which are kindest to the environment, are
entitled to carry the EU Ecolabel.

but at a cost to the environment.Dishwashers and
washing machines use energy to run motors and
heat air and water, and they use detergents that can
pollute the water. Refrigerators, on the other hand,
have internal fluids and insulation that can cause
harm to the ozone layer. All appliances affect the
environment, but some less than others
. Those bearing the European
Eco-label:
ł use less energy than standard
products;
ł use water more efficiently; and
ł have manufacturer guarantees
for extended operation and
parts availability.

‡ Ecolabels and Green Stickers are labelling systems
for food and consumer products.
‡ Ecolabels are often voluntary, but Green Stickers
are mandated by law in North America for major
appliances and automobiles.
‡ They are a form of sustainability
measurement directed at consumers, intended to
make it easy to take environmental concerns into
account when shopping.
‡ Some labels quantify pollution or energy
consumption by way of index scores or units of
measurement; others simply assert compliance with
a set of practices or minimum requirements for
sustainability or reduction of harm to the
environment. Usually both the precautionary
principle and the substitution principle are used
when defining the rules for what products can be
ecolabelled.

‡ One of the basic ideas behind the development of
the EU Eco-label also may be consistent across all
the EU is to provide information.
