Need
Fastestgrowing energy resource in the world.
Reduced Dependence on Fossil Fuels.
Environmental Advantages.
Matching Peak Time Output with Peak Time
Demand.
Flexible Locations.
AN OVERVIEW

 Powered by sun’s energy.

 Solar array collect the energy from the sun and
converts it into usable electrical energy.
 Power trackers convert it into the required
voltage.
 Motor controller sends power to the motor.

Dept. Of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. AIT

Basic Principles
 Light(photons) hits solar cells.
 Its energy frees electron-hole pair.
 Electron flow = Current
 Cell’s electric field = Voltage
 Voltage * Current = Power

COMPONENTS USED
 Solar Panels.
 Charge Controllers/Power Trackers.
 Batteries.
 Inverters
 Load / Application

1. Solar Array

 Packaged interconnected
assembly of solar cells.
 Uses photovoltaic effect
to generate electricity.
 Produce electricity from
range of frequencies of
light, excluding UV, IR.

2. Power Trackers/ Charge
Controllers

Power trackers convert

the solar array voltage to
the system voltage.

Power tracker’s role

 It regulates the
charging of battery.
 Acts as a Stabilizer.
 Too risky to connect
solar panel w/o
power tracker, causes
battery damage.

Dr. AIT
3. Batteries

The batteries store energy

from the power tracker and
makes them available for
the motor's use.
Use of Batteries
 After the power tracker
convert the energy, it
send it to battery, then the
battery stores the energy.
 This energy is send to the
motor and controller to
make the vehicle run.
 Nickel-Hydrogen battery.
 85% eff., used in ISS.

Dr. AIT
4. Inverters
 Converts direct
current(DC) to standard
120 volts alternating
current(VAC).
 Equipped with step-up
transformer to produce
standard 120/240
VAC.

5. Applications / Load

 In all the vehicles, the principle behind the

operation remains the same.

 Just the applications of solar energy changes

in the way we want.

Advantages

 Cheap when compared to other engine driven vehicles.

 Have more engine life.
 Exhaust/pollution is zero than to petrol engines.
 Cost of running is very low.
 No need of refueling.
 No need of extra maintenance such as engine oil
changing, coolant etc.

Dept. Of Mechanical Engineering,

Dr. AIT
Disadvantages
 Requires large area of installation for
achieving high efficiency.
 Efficiency of the system relies on the
location of the sun.
 Production of solar energy is influenced
by presence of clouds or pollution in air
 High initial cost.

Dept. Of Mechanical Engineering,

Dr. AIT
Conclusion
 Can be used for various purposes.
 Save our non renewable resources.
 Reliable power, can be provided everywhere.

Make solar vehicles a viable mean of TRANSPORT.

SOLAR POWER CAN BE A SOLUTION
