Introduction of Fishing Industry
 The fisheries industry includes any industry or activity concerned with
taking, culturing, processing, preserving, storing, transporting, marketing or
selling fish or fish products.
 1.5 billion people depend upon fish for food, income & livelihood (2008-09)
 2.6 billion people receive 20% of their animal protein from fish, compared to
8% in developed countries (2008-09)
 Fish are the most heavily traded food commodity and fastest growing
international “agricultural” commodity

 Freshwater fish: carps, nile perch etc

 Flatfish: flounders, halibuts, soles, turbots, dab etc

 Coastal fishes: seabreams, seabasses, groupers, snappers, croakers, drums etc

 Demersal fishes: congers, orange roughy, hairtails, redfishes, gurnards etc

 Tuna: skipjack, bluefins, albacore, yellowfin, bigeye etc

 India has a 3rd position in fisheries and 2nd in aquaculture


 Indian fishing is worth about Rs. 32,000 crores
 India contribute about:
 4.4% of global fish production (2006 – 07)
 1.4% of the Gross Domestic Product (2006 – 07)
 5.34 % of the agricultural GDP (2004 – 05)
 Per capita fish availability is 9.0 kg
 14 million employment opportunities have been generated till 2008-09
 Number of Fishers: 59,58,744
 Percentage of Population dependent on Fisheries: 0.58%

Some Other Facts About
Fishing Industry
 A recent study by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) said
that the fisheries sector in the country should be brought under the ambit of the
Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act so as to help it
expand its market and ensure of an efficient system of trade
 Till 2006-07, about 7.21 lakh hectare water area brought under scientific fish
farming
 8.63 lakh fish farmers/ fishermen trained in improved practices & 12.38 lakh
persons benefited till 2006-07
