STUDYING THE ADAPTIVE COMFORT APPROACH WITHIN A HOT DRY CLIMATE: A CASE STUDY IN EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS IN THE EGYPTIAN CLIMATE.
ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55-2004, Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, includes an introduction to the concept of adaptation with a new method for determining acceptable thermal conditions in naturally conditioned spaces. To use this method, spaces must have operable windows that can be opened by occupants. For a range of metabolic rates from 1.0 to 1.3 met (58.15 to 75.6 W/m2), a range of acceptable operative temperatures (18 C to 31 C) are related to the mean monthly outdoor temperature ranging from (10 C to 34 C). Field studies are required to investigate the extension of the limits of this model. This study aims to verify the model in the Egyptian context and to study the possibility of extending the limits of the model.

ABSTRACT:
In order to conduct class-three field studies, for comparison of measurements and subjective votes on thermal comfort in educational buildings under Egyptian climatic conditions, the process is divided into three main phases forming what is noted as Methodology of a field study . The first phase is considered as a preparation phase, the second phase concerns finalizing decisions and tools and the third phase is the field work and data analysis. The main points within each phase are listed here, and inquiries from each phase are discussed.

Methodology of a field study:

Phase 1 : Pre stage of the field study:

Determining objectives of the field study Designing & examining the
questionnaire

Selecting the measuring equipments

Ascertaining the participation of the selected buildings

Site visiting Drawings acquisition Validation of information

Phase 2 : Field experiment setting:

Determining sampling strategy Determining method & timing of questionnaire distribution Determining the time of monitoring the indoor environment Determining the type of data analysis

Phase 3 : Conducting field experiment:

Collecting data from field
