Theory and The Review of the Related Literature

1. As soon as you have chosen a topic for your thesis or dissertation, you should look for the theory linking your topic with an available body of knowledge. 2. Kerlinger (1973) defines theory as a set of interrelated constructs (concepts), definitions, and propositions that presents a systematic view of phenomena by

By specifying relations among variables, with the purpose of explaining and predicting the phenomena. 3. In search of the theory, you gather information mostly from the related literature.

Durkheims work on egoistic suicide His theoretical statement says that: a higher degree of individualism in a social group cause a higher rate of suicide in that group. We can illustrate it this way :

Independent

Dependent

Individualism

Suicide

Conceptual Framework:
Individualism in Durkheims study was broken down into more concrete concepts, although in a quite different way. He linked with the characteristics of his respondents and from there made his prediction as to who are in the more Individualistic social situation. His conceptual Framework may be illustrated this way

Independent

Intervening

Dependent

Single Protestant Individualism Highly educated Professionals

Suicide

Those below are some functions of the theory. A. It provides the study with a conceptual framework, justifying the need for investigation B. It leads you into the specific questions to ask in your own investigation.
C. It presents the relationship among variables that have been investigated.

5. The review of related literature involves the systematic identification, location, and analysis of documents containing information related to the research problem. 6. The review of the related literature performs some functions that are indicated below.
A. It provides the conceptual or theoretical framework of the planned research.

B. It provides you with the information about past researches related to the intended study. C. It give you a feeling of confidence since by means of the review of related literature you will have on hand all constructs related to your study. D. It gives you information about the research methods used, the population and sampling considered, the instruments used in gathering the data and the statistical computation in previous research.

E. It provides findings and conclusions of past investigations which you may relate to your own findings and conclusions. 7. Research literature refers to published or unpublished reports of actual research studies done previously. 8. Conceptual literature pertains to articles or books written by authorities giving their opinions, experiences, theories or ideas of what is good and bad, desirable and desirable within the problem area.

9. The library is usually the source of both conceptual and research literature. 10. A good tip for you is to be ready to spend the whole day or even day in a library. Flitting visits to libraries will not give you beneficial results. 11. Fox(2004) suggests that you start reviewing conceptual literature first since it is more readily available than research literature.

12. The card catalog is to a library as the index is to a book. However, there are varied of indexes that can help you get access to information. 13. Theses and dissertations, as well as abstracts, are other sources of the literature.
