Controlling Deviance
Deviance- a behavior that is
contradicting to the norms of a
group; going over the limit of
tolerance for nonconformist
behavior and, if discovered, are
subject to punishment.

Different kinds of Deviant
behavior:
Improper – behaviors simply
frowned upon and are punished
only formally.
Antisocial- acts that endanger
other people and their property.
Example: assault and robbery
2.Self-destructive – acts that
destroy the persons engage in it.
Example: drug addiction,
alcoholism, suicide
3.Immoral- acts that are not
dangerous; rather, these go
against the morality in society
Example: prostitution,
homosexuality, gambling
4. Destructive to the society
itself – behaviors that bring
about destruction to the society
or at least to its ruler. H
Conformity

Conformist maybe aware of impulses to deviant


behavior, but may not give in to them for any
of the following reasons:

5. Through the process of self-interaction, they


exercise self-control, knowing that the cost of
deviant behavior would be guilt, shame and
loss of self-esteem.

2. They want to keep the approval of their


significant others.

3. They may fear punishment, ostracism, loss of


their jobs, citizenship, freedom or life.

4. They may see no point in deviating from the


straight and narrow if the rewards of deviance
do not seem glamorous.

5. They may simply have no opportunity for


deviant behavior despite fantasies and
impulses towards it.

Causes of Deviant

The classes of deviance can be


classified as:

1. Biological theories
-It explains criminal behavior by
body type or somatotype.
According to this theory,
endomorphs who are short,
plump people and ectomorphs
who are thin and frail ones are
much less likely to become
juvenile delinquents than
mesomorphs who are muscular,
athletic people.

-It stresses early- childhood
experiences. Early
traumatic experiences
produce a certain type of
abnormal personality that,
in turn, expresses itself in
antisocial acts or deviant
behavior.

-Deals with people not as unique
personalities but as members of the
community or society who occupy
different positions.

Controlling Deviance
Two ways of controlling
deviance:
1. Informal Control
-It involves people’s
internalization of the norms of
the society.
-It also includes pressure from
peer group. You’re under

2. Formal Control
-It involves the police, courts,
prisons, mental hospitals,
probation and parole, and the
law.
-Prevents or discourages people
from committing crimes, punish
those who cannot be prevented
and rehabilitate those who are You have to remain
