Abdullapurmet
Year/Semester : II Yr / III Semester
Subject : Quantitative Techniques - I
Sub.Code : CCP303
Topic : Mode
Duration : 50 Mts
Sub-Topic : Bimodal Distribution
Teaching Aids : PPT & Animations
CCP303.46 1
Objectives :
On Completion of this period, you would be
able to :
 Calculate Mode when it is ill-defined –
Typical problems

CCP303.46 2
Recap :

In the previous classes, YOU learnt:

 Calculation of Mode:
 Individual Series
 Discrete Series
 Continuous Series
 When Class Intervals are unequal

CCP303.46 3
Bi-modal Distribution :

 When there are two modal values, modal

value can be ascertained by the following
formula
Mode = 3Median – 2Mean
 This measure is called the Empirical Mode

CCP303.46 4
Example 1 :

 In a bi-modal series, the value of Median

and Mean are 141 and 140 respectively.
Find the value of mode

CCP303.46 5
Solution 1 :

We are given Median = 141

Mean = 140
Mode = 3Median – 2Mean
= 3 X 141 – 2 X 140
= 423 – 280
Mode = 143

CCP303.46 6
Example 2 :

 A moderately asymmetrical distribution’s of

Median is 42.8 and Mode is 40. Find its AM

CCP303.46 7
Solution to Ex.2 :

Given in problem, Median = 42.8

Mode = 40
Mode = 3 Median – 2 Mean
40 = 3 X 42.8 – 2 Mean
2 Mean = 128.4 – 40
2 Mean = 88.4
Mean = 44.2

CCP303.46 8
Example 3 :
Find the Mode from the following by Grouping
method:

CCP303.46 11
Solution Contd:

 Both classes 40 – 50 and 50 – 60 show

maximum frequency (5)

 It is a bi-modal distribution

 Hence, calculate Mode by Empirical method

 Formula for Mode = 3 Median – 2 Mean

 First, calculate Median and then AM

CCP303.46 12
Solution Contd :

Calculation of Median and AM

Class Mid value dx = (m-A)/c f fdx cf

(A=45,C=10)
0 – 10 5 -4 7 -28 7
10 – 20 15 3 9 -27 16

70 – 80 75 3 7 21 74
N=74 ∑fd’ = -26
CCP303.46 13
Solution Contd:

Σ fdx
Mean = A + -------------- X C
N
= 45 – (26 /74) X 10 = 45 – 3,378
= 41.622
M = Size of (N / 2)th item = Size of (74 / 2)th item
= Size of 37th item
Median lies in the class 40 – 50 class
L2 – L1(m-c)
Median = L1 + --------------- ---
f
50 – 40 (37 – 32)
= 40 + ----------------------------
13
= 40 + (50 / 13) = 40 + 3.85
= 43.85
CCP303.46 14
Solution Contd :

Mode = 3 Median – 2 Mean

= 3 X 43.85 – 2 X 41.62
= 131.55 – 83.24
= 48.31

CCP303.46 15
Summary :
