CCP-403.32-33 1
OBJECTIVES

On completion of this period, you would be able to

solve

 Exercise on the Regression Equations by taking

deviations from actual mean

CCP-403.32-33 2
RECAP

In the last period, we discussed solving of

regression equations by taking deviations
from actual mean

CCP-403.32-33 3
Example 1

 The following table gives the normal weight of kids

during the year 8 years of life.

Age in 0 1 2 3 5 6 7 8
years
Weight in 5 7 8 10 15 17 20 22
kgs.

Estimate the weight of a kid at the age of 4 years.

Write both the lines of Regression.
CCP-403.32-33 4
SOLUTION TO EX. 1

 Line of Regression of Y on X :
 Y  Y  byx ( X  X )
 Line of Regression of X on Y :
 Y  Y  byx ( X  X )
 Where X and Y are the actual Means of X and Y
series
 bxy and byx are the Regression Coefficients.

CCP-403.32-33 5
Solution contd

 Means of X and Y series :

 X   X / N  32 / 8  4
 Y   Y / N 104 / 8 13
 Since both means are integers, the following
formula will be used for computing bxy and byx.0

CCP-403.32-33 6
Solution contd

 bxy = ∑xy / ∑y2

 byx = ∑xy / ∑x2

 Where x=X–X

 y=Y-Y

CCP-403.32-33 7
Solution contd

Calculation of Regression Equations

Age in X–4 x2 Y – 13 Weight y2 xy

years X (x) (y) in Kgs Y
0 -4 16 -8 5 64 32
1 -3 9 -6 7 36 18
2 -2 4 -5 8 25 10
3 -1 1 -3 10 9 3
5 1 1 2 15 4 2
6 2 4 4 17 16 8
7 3 9 7 20 49 21
8 4 16 9 22 81 36
∑X = 32 ∑x=0 ∑x2 = 60 ∑y=0 ∑Y = ∑y2 =284 ∑xy =130
104

CCP-403.32-33 8
Solution contd

 Thus, from the table

 ∑X = 32 ∑ Y = 104 ∑x = 0 ∑y = 0
 ∑x2 = 60 ∑y2 = 284 ∑xy = 130

 Regression coefficients :
 bxy = ∑xy/∑y2 = 130/284 = 0.458

 byx = ∑xy/∑x2 = 130/60 = 2.167

CCP-403.32-33 9
Solution contd

REGRESSION EQUATION X ON Y
 X  X  bxy (Y  Y )
 X - 4 = 0.458(Y-13)
 X - 4 = 0.458Y - 5.954
 X = 0.458Y - 5.954+4
 X = 0.458Y - 1.954

CCP-403.32-33 10
Solution contd

Regression Equation of Y on X

 Y  Y  byx( X  X )
 Y - 13 = 2.167 (X - 4)
 Y - 13 = 2.167X - 8.668
 Y = 2.167X - 8.668 + 13
 Y = 2.167X + 5.668

CCP-403.32-33 11
Solution contd

 Weight of a Kid at the age of 4 years. i.e.,

estimating the value of Y when X = 4.
 regression equation of Y on X is used
 Y = 2.167X+5.668
 Y = 2.167(4)+5.668
= 8.668+5.668
= 14.336
 The weight of a kid at the age of 4 is
14.34Kgs

SUMMARY
 In this class you solved one exercise on
Regression Equations by taking deviations from
actual mean
 Given assignment

equations and calculate the correlation coefficient
 Estimate the value of Y which should correspond on
an average to X = 6.2

X 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Y 9 8 10 12 11 13 14 16 15

CCP-403.32-33 14
Ans. X = 0.95Y – 6.4
Y = 0.95X + 7.25
r = 0.95
value of Y = 13.14

CCP-403.32-33 15
Assignment - 2
 Calculate two regression equations of X on Y and Y on
X from the data given below taking deviations from
actual means of X and Y
 Estimate the likely demand when price is Rs.20
