Project review

The origins of this project dates back to late 1990 when a group of professors from the Polytechnic University of Madrid intended to demonstrate that the university had the basic knowledge, materials and human resources to carry out an undertaking of this nature. Launch time: July7 , 1995

Mission Objects Analysis the behavior of liquids under microgravity conditions Demonstrate new technologies in orbit. Testing of two experimental solar panels supplied by ESA/ESTEC store-and-forward communications

Payload

An experimental module to analyze the behavior of liquids under microgravity conditions

in-orbit demonstration experiments related to attitude control, store-and-forward communications and solar cells technology

Orbit Properties

Sun-synchronous polar orbit

Inclination: 98.1000 deg

Apogee: 676 km (420 mi). Perigee: 663 km (411 mi) Period: 98.10 min Operational life: seven months (213 days). Flying over the Spanish skies between 2 pm and 2 am

Launch Vehicle

Launch vehicle: Ariane IV-40 Launch site: Kourou (in French Guiana) Payload type: Secondary payload along with the small French satellite Cerise(main payload was the military satellite Helios 1A)
Why this choice?
Low Cost Satellite and Launcher have the same standard system High Reliability for main payload

Structure

Parallelepiped in shape Dimensions(LWH): 450450543mm Total mass: 47 kg

Why this choice?

This shape and dimension are selected in order to take full advantage of the geometric envelope provided by the launcher

Structure
Materials used in structure

Aluminum-Zinc alloy 7075 T73 Hostaform C9021 (Delrin 07)

Note: These material is in compliance with the ESA PSS-01-701 standard.

Why this choice?

We should see the ESA PSS-01-701 standard

Attitude control subsystem

Sensor

Two TAM 7 MK2 S triaxial magnetometers, by Ultra Electronics

Three J176 ALM gyroscopes by Sextant Avionique

Attitude control subsystem

Why this choice?
Triaxial in one package
Small size and light weight: 115 x 35 x 32mm Operating range: High precision: Low power: Low cost -32C to + 71C 0.01%/C +22V to 30V dc 30mA 250gr

Note: Two magnetometers are used in order to increase reliability

Attitude control subsystem

Actuator
Three magnetic coils, two of which are located on the sides of the satellite whereas the third one is located on the lower tray and on the upper tray
The coils were manufactured with 100 spires of enameled copper wire, produced with PolyesterPolyamide Thetic, class H resins. Each coil is covered with kapton adhesive tape

Attitude control subsystem

Why this choice?
Magnetic coil versus other actuators: Low power Small size Lightweight Low cost

And totally it is good for

Educational, experimental micro satellite

Thermal control subsystem

Passive thermal control

The interior surfaces of the satellite are finished with lowemissivity aluminum
Inside of the satellite is thermally insulated from the lateral closure panels Low thermal conductivity stainless steel screws were used in connection MLIs were used for cover the outside of lower and upper tray(the MLI contains seven layers of aluminized kapton with fiberglass as a separator) The satellite revolves in orbit around its longitudinal axis in order to keep the temperature of the solar panels uniform.

Power subsystem
Four solar panels

Two experimental solar panel(supplied by ESA/ESTEC):

One panel, manufactured by DASA, includes silicon cells and a

new aluminum interconnection system One panel with gallium arsenide cells, produced by FIAR

The other two panels use space proved technology, with silicon cells manufactured by DASA-WEDEL Product Capacity: 30 W of power at the beginning of the mission for each panel(average power supplied during one orbit is 20 W)

Power subsystem
Battery

Two batteries were used in parallel in order to provide equipment redundancy(supply 6 Ah)
Each consisting of 14 Nickel-Cadmium cells, GATES model GH 6000F Output levels: 5V, +12V, +15V, 24V and 30 V Also includes control devices for voltage and intensity levels, protection and battery charge control and timing of the latency period after separation
