Treatment

By Lee Palmer

Intentions
What is your documentary setting out to achieve? For my documentary I will look to challenge peoples views on the Olympics as most people see it as such a prestigious event and is only benefiting people. I will challenge them by asking them how it has affected business and families who used to live on the Olympic park. I am looking to explore how the Olympics affects youth and the community I will be doing this by interviewing various people from the streets around the Olympics. I am investigating the positive and negative effects of the Olympics and the effect it has on the youth and community. I am looking to prove that the Olympics does have a bad effect on the youth and community and not just a positive effect. I will be doing this by interviewing a senior member of the Olympic committee and also look to interview someone who has been affected by the Olympics in a positive and negative way. My angle for this will be to look at the different reasons why this effects youth and the community around Stratford.

Content of Ideas
What is your topic? The topic I am looking at is the Olympics. I chose this topic as it is being held in London this year and thought it would be an interesting topic for both my audience and myself. What is your Angle? I looked at several different angles for my documentary such as History of the games, financial side of the games but The angle I decided to pick for my documentary is how the youth is effected by the Olympics. What is your unique selling point? My unique selling point will be that I will look to get interviews with Olympic members such as Lord Coe and others and it will also be unique as I will look to take my documentary back to the beginning and kind of have a flashback of what's gone on to reiterate to my audience about the past of the Olympics. What arguments/ debates around your idea will your documentary explore? The debates my documentary will go into will be about how the Olympics has effected youth. I will look to go into both sides of the argument and at the end give a summery and my own opinion on how this affects youth.

Key Findings
Content Research My three Key findings for the content research are; facts and figures, expert opinions and the type of content I could include in my documentary. Each of these a regarded as my key findings as these helped me the most in what content I should include in my documentary. For facts and figures I found many about the Olympics as whole such as the cost of the Olympics and how many young game makers are being taken to the games. Expert opinions was another key finding as its such a big event it is talked about on a daily basis world wide so there was a lot of expert opinions from Olympic committee members and also from neutrals who have no involvement in the sport. The type of content, this research allowed me to find out what angles of the Olympics have already been published and my angle idea of how youth are affected had very little amount of media attention. Focus Group My three key findings for the Focus group are; Feedback for the content, Involvement in my topic and Feedback on how it appeals to my target audience. Feedback for content allowed me to speak to people in my target audience and see which angle/content I should include. Involvement in my topic, this was when one of my focus group audience said they applied to become a young game maker. Feedback on how it appeals to my target audience, this was again how I can make it Entertain, inform and educate my audience.

Key Findings
Questionnaire My three key findings for my questionnaire are; What topic most people would like to see as a documentary, What they where interested in and How I could make it appeal to them with my documentary. What topic most people would like to see as a documentary really chose my documentary as most people chose Olympics over my other two suggestions. What they where interested in was another key finding as I can look to include a Olympic party in my documentary. How I could make it appeal to them with my documentary, this helped me to find out what different aspect it could include that my audience would like.

Textual analysis My three key findings for my questionnaire are; What style of documentary they would like, Who I could have in my documentary to make it interesting and Genre of music I should use for my documentary. Looking at other peoples documentary's on the same subject I noticed that a lot of them where styled to be quite slow, so this helped me decide that I would have a fast paced documentary which would appeal more to my audience. I also decided I would include music artists such as Tinie Tempah Ed Sheeran and more as these are the type of people my audience would listen to.

Legal and Regulatory Considerations

Impartially and diversity of opinion
This is seen as the centre of the BBC s commitment to there audience. This means it cannot be biased and the BBC must show both sides of the argument. During my documentary I will not be biased as I will cover both positives and negatives sides of youth involvement of the Olympic games.

Truth and Accuracy

The BBC try to achieve the truth and accuracy in all their outputs. The accuracy in their outputs is not just the facts correct. They will use the facts to get the truth from situations. This will affect my work as when showing facts and figures about the Olympics I will have to be careful to make sure they are accurate.

Children
When the BBC film children and other young people they will always safeguard their welfare. The BBC will protect their physical and emotional welfare during filming of the production and also the publishing of the production. If content is seen unsuitable for the children this will then be changed so it is suitable for them. This wont affect the content of my documentary as it will be suitable for children although if I was to interview a few people under the age of 18 I will have to ask for there parent permission.

Legal and Regulatory Considerations

Defamation
Defamation is when you make a documentary or programme and you criticize or offend a person or organisation. This could affect my work as I could offend the Olympic committee if I say something out of line or I say something to offend a young game makers who is participating in the games.

Contempt of court
Contempt of court is when a programme will include references to a legal proceedings. This will affect my work if athletes have an injunction about the media talking about them. For example if the have injunction in place as they have decided to play for another nationality at the Olympics games.

Copyright
Copyright stops people from taking/stealing other peoples pictures, video clips and music and using them and making it their own. This will affect my work as when I use any Music or archive footage. I will have to make sure I have the correct permission from the person with the rights of the clip or track.

Legal and Regulatory Considerations

Reconstruction
Reconstruction is when you may reenact an event that has had happened previously, as seen in Crime watch. The reconstruction must be fair an accurate for the audience and must no mislead them. This could affect my work as I could reconstruct a video of one of the young game makers at the London Riots. If I was to reconstruct this then I will have to be fair and accurate so I don t mislead the audience.

Dealing with Contributors

The wording of adverts should be approved by the commissioning editor and programme lawyer. Also contributors should take part in programmes on the basis of their informed consent. They should normally get a signed release form. This may affect my documentary as it may have to be approved by a programme lawyer and will have to get a signed release form.

POM (Potentially offensive material)

POM is material that can be seen as offensive to different people in ways such as, violence, racial and sexual. If I was to show footage of young people getting into fights and suggesting that why should they be given the chance to help out at the London Olympics.

Commercial Viability
Budget
Cost 3837.30 This cost me this as I had to buy all of the equipment for pre- production, production and post production. I bought equipment such as mac s, cameras, microphone, tripods and other stuff like food, train fairs and Actors money. The money I will have to spend for my actual documentary will only be on train fairs and food due to be given the equipment such as camera s and Imac from the school. My documentary would provide good money for value as I will look to interview several high status people such as people from University of east London, Mayor of Redbridge and a member of the Olympic committee

Distribution and Exhibition

Inform What the young game makers are. Educate How the Olympics will affect the youth and community Entertain my documentary will mainly come across serious although I will add humour when my presenter is talking and he will come across light hearted.

Commercial Viability

Programmes I am competing against; The programmes I will be competing with are Holby city, Natures weirdest events, The Fat Fighters, New cowboy builders and Who wants to be a millionaire.

The Market

He also has interviews with people from inside the target audience and also outside which gives a variety in peoples views and opinions.
