LOW COST CARRIERS

DEFINITION
The low-cost carrier to be an airline that operates a point-to point network, pays employees below the industry average wage, and offers no frills service. The two most prominent low-cost carriers, JetBlue and Southwest, both have labor costs 30% to 40% lower than the mainline carriers.

HISTORY
India's first low-cost airline, Air Deccan started service on August 25, 2003. Air Deccan now faces stiff competition from other low-cost Indian carriers such as SpiceJet, GoAir and Paramount Airways. IndiGo Airlines recently placed an order for 100 Airbus A320s The success of Air Deccan has spurred the entry of more than a dozen low-cost airlines in India.

HISTORY
India's first low-cost airline, Air Deccan started service on August 25, 2003.28 Deccan Aviation was started in 1997 with one helicopter, it now has a fleet of 10 helicopters and 2 fixed wing aircraft deployed across eight bases at Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Ranchi, Hyderabad, Surat, Katra and Colombo Air Deccan our first flight was launched on 23rd August 2003 from Bangalore to Hubli.

Spice Jet

History
SpiceJet is a low-cost airline based in New Delhi, India. SpiceJet airlines is promoted by Ajay Singh, the Kansangra family and Sanjay Malhotra. It has a fleet of 6 Boeing 737-800 in single class configuration with 189 seats. Spice Jet s mission is to become India s preferred low cost airline, delivering the lowest air fares with the highest consumer value, to price sensitive consumers.

IndiGo

History
IndiGo is the latest entrant to the domestic civil aviation space in India. The low cost carrier took off its inaugural flight from Delhi to Imphal on August 4, 2006. By the end of 2006, IndiGo is aiming at six aircrafts and 12 cities and has plans to expand its fleet to 15 by the end of 2007. IndiGo would have fleet of only one type of aircraft, the A-320 that has a capacity of 180 passengers.

DOMESTIC CARRIERS

Kingfisher Airlines

HISTORY
The airline started operations on 9 May 2005[1], following the lease of 4 Airbus A320 aircraft. As of July 2007, Kingfisher operates only on domestic routes, however it has announced plans to start flights to the USA with Airbus A340 and Airbus A380 aircraft. Kingfisher Airlines' main "luxury" component is its InFlight Entertainment System, a first among Indian airlines.

AIR SAHARA

HISTORY
Air Sahara is one of India s leading private airlines. Air Sahara was established on September 20, 1991 and began operations on December 3, 1993 with a fleet of two Boeing 737-200 aircrafts. Sahara Airlines was rebranded as Air Sahara on October 2, 2000. On March 22, 2004 Air Sahara became an international carrier with the start of flights from Chennai to Colombo.

Aviation Services
The aim of the Aviation division is to assist in maintaining the critical aviation infrastructure in support of economic development. In 2001, AKFED has taken a majority stake in Air Burkina (Ouagadougou) and in 2005 in Compagnie Arienne du Mali (Bamako). AKFED is in the process to re-fleet these companies and is constantly improving the network of both airlines in the domestic, regional and intercontinental (Paris) field. In November 2007, Air Uganda (Kampala) will start its regional network and thus bring back a locally based airline to Ugandans.
