What is now known about learning provides important guidelines for uses of technology that can help students and teachers develop the competencies needed for the 21st century. It is important to understand that technologies do not guarantee effective learning;

century education

In fact, inappropriate uses of technology can actually hinder learning. Educators of the twenty-first century must become better at understanding when and under what conditions, technology can best be used to leverage student learning.

Emerging technology
Emerging technology is defined as a media that is coming into view, coming into existence, or coming to commonality. It is an innovative technology that is reshaping the nature of education. Computer and network based technologies now hold great potential for increasing the access to information as well as a means of promoting learning.
7

Emerging technology
Schools and classrooms never before had such universal access to information. Technologies are transforming classrooms into more engaging, collaborative and productive learning environments in which instructions can be customized to student s specific needs, interests and learning styles. It is also redefining the way educators teach as well as the role they serve from being the sole source of information to being a guide, facilitator and coach in the learning process

Our proposal
We would like to propose a social networking site; facebook as a tool in promoting teaching and learning in Open University Malaysia.

Why FACEBOOK?

hy

Facebook is not just a great way for you to find old friends or learn about what's happening this Weekend. It is also an incredible learning tool. Teachers can utilize facebook for class projects, enhancing communication, and engaging students in a manner that might not be entirely possible in traditional classroom settings.

10

Advantages of
No need to ask people to join - aimed at those students already using facebook regularly. This means they are already familiar with how the site works. Using our observations, that many students (and maybe some staff) log in to facebook more often than they log in to the VLE. Many people are using mobile gadgets to access facebook on a daily basis therefore it would be easy for them to receive updates It is easy to set up and maintain a profile and page (or group) for social learning - there are lots of online resources to demonstrate how if you need instructions.
11

(cont.)

Advantages of

Privacy - In our roles of safeguarding it is very important for colleges, schools etc use of social media to be wary of possible problems and deal with them - set up with clear goals and strategies to minimise privacy issues.
