MOTIVATING YOURSELF
What motivates you? Motivation is intrinsic (it comes from within). Recognize the Power of PURPOSE
Goals and Objectives are critical in helping you be more motivated, so be clear about them. Write them down, review and update them regularly. Discuss them with your advisor and others in your CSO.

Motivational Analysis
Three things which motivate people: 1. Need for achievement 2. Need for influence 3. Need for affiliation

Achievement Motive
Characteristics of Motivational Type: Concern with excellence Wants unique accomplishment Thrives in competition (desire to out-perform others) Restless and innovative (enjoys striving)
Thinks about: Doing a better job Goals and how to attain them Obstacles and how to remove them

Influence Motive
Characteristics of Motivational Type:

Concern for reputation or position Desire to present ideas Strong feelings about organization Enjoys influencing others Often exhibits strong communication skills

Thinks about: Influence he/she has on others How to use influence to make change How to gain status or recognition

Affiliation Motive
Characteristic of Motivational Type: Concern with being liked and accepted Likes warm and friendly environment Concern about being separated from others
Thinks about: Are they fitting in Helping and consoling others Sensitive to the feeling of others and their own feelings

MENTORING...
is a powerful and popular way to influence

and motivate others. has a significant positive impact on individuals. helps you use your experience and knowledge to help others. A good mentor is a good listener. A good mentor asks powerful questions.

Whenever possible, be positive; always be honest;

never compromise the group. Show appreciation, to one and all. Reinforce positive behavior. Listen! Include everyoneeven those who never participate. Ask for what you want and focus on the results. When youve tried everything, try again. DO GREAT THINGS!!!!!
