SPLEEN

Largest lymph organ It lies in the left hypochondrial region it is covered all over by peritoneum except at Hilum Mesothelium (simple squamous epithelium) Lines the outer surface of peritoneum. capsule is dense irregular connective tissue which sends in Trebeculae into 4/26/12 the pulp of spleen

fine collagen fibers Reticular Cells. 33

Spaces in reticulum are 4/26/12 filled in by Splenic Pulp

White Pulp of spleen

(a)

Includes Lymphoid tissue (both diffuse and nodular) Periarterial lymphatic sheats (PALS) surrounding splenic arteriole. replacing their Tunica adventitia. It contains T-lymphocytes.

Splenic nodule (Malpighian corpuscle) B Lymphocytes (Bone marrow derived). Visible to naked eye as white dots. 0.25 1 mm.. Germinal centre may be present . mantle arteriole entering splenic nodule from periarterial lymph sheath eccentric in position (Central Artery) with 4/26/12 T. Media. definite

Differences between splenic sinuses and ordinary capillaries

1.

Splenic sinusoids have irregular lumen and are highly distensible Have specialized endothelial cells (littoral cells) in their wall which are rod shaped and run longitudinally in the vessel wall Large gaps between the endothelial cells Incomplete basal lamina

Functions of spleen
1.

Filtration of blood: bacteria are removed. Production of lymphocytes: occurs in the white pulp. Destruction of old and worn out erythrocytes: spleen is the graveyard of RBCs. This function is carried out by macrophages in the wall of sinusoids. Storage of blood:

It states that the terminal arterial capillaries open directly into the venous sinuses.
