From about 1964- 1970 the Beatles were the worlds most famous band. Since then, there have been movies, books, articles, college courses, etc. about them. The Beatles are legendary! They sold over 1 billion (1,000,000,000) CDs and videos. THATS A LOT!
All My Loving 1964

The Beatles were made up of four musicians from Liverpool, England. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They all pretty much taught themselves how to play.

Before the Beatles:

In the 1950s when the Beatles were growing up, Liverpool was a poor seaport city. But being by the ocean was good for John, Paul, George, and Ringo because sailors brought back rockand-roll records from the United States. Rock-and-Roll grew out of American styles like country and African-American rhythm and blues. Rock-and-Roll had a lot of energy and was wild. The favorite instruments were:

Guitars, drums, pianos, saxophones Yesterday

Influencers:
The Beatles were inspired by artists like:
Elvis Presley Bill Haley and the Comets

Chuck Berry

Little Richard

John Lennon: Founder

- John was born in 1940 during WWII. Johns father left when he was five. Although John was raised by his aunt and uncle, his mother stayed near by and taught him to play the guitar a little. - John was a troublemaker in school. He was smart but never got good grades. -John Lennon started a band called the Quarrymen while he attended an art college

Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney was 2 years younger than John Lennon. Pauls father set up a pair of radio receivers for Paul and his brother. This is how Paul heard his first rock-and-roll music. When Paul was a teenager he started to play tunes on the piano, then the guitar. He practiced everywhere, even the bathroom! Paul met John Lennon when he saw the Quarrymen play. After Showing John his skills, he was invited to join.

George Harrison
If it werent for Paul McCartney, George may not have been a member of the Beatles. John Lennon thought George was too young. Paul was persistent, and after George played a popular song perfectly for them, John agreed to let him join. George was the youngest Beatle, born in 1943. His parents encouraged him as a young boy to keep playing the guitar. When he was 14, he could play very well. George was 16 when he joined the Quarrymen.

Ringo Starr aka Richard Starkey

Ringo was born in one of the roughest parts of Liverpool. He was stricken with many illnesses until he was 15. He fell behind in school because he was sick so much. Ringo began playing the drums as a teenager.
Ringo joined a band popular in Liverpool which played at many of the same places as the Quarrymen now called the Beatles. Ringo stepped in for Pete Best when he didnt or couldnt come to shows. Finally, they asked Ringo to be their regular drummer.

They began to play at small clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg, Germany. These clubs were dark and dank. The Beatles had to sing for hours at a time. To keep their energy up, The Beatles often told jokes, ate and drank on stage. The fans loved it!

Signing with a Record Company

A businessman named Brian Epstein who ran a record store in Liverpool hear and was impressed by the Beatles. He got them signed with a record company. He scheduled them for concerts, and got them on the radio and TV shows. Brian told them the only rule was they had to stop goofing around on stage so much.

First Album: Please Please Me

In 1962 the Beatles first single Love Me Do was released. It reached #17 in the UK. 2 years later it was released in the US and reached #1.

Beatlemania
Traveling was difficult. The fans screamed so loud it was hard for the Beatles to hear themselves sing. They had to rush from place to place to avoid being mobbed by adoring,

screaming fans.

NEW Beatles Sound

Finally they stopped traveling to focus on making records. The Beatles experimented with new sounds in their music. They created some of the most exciting music ever! They put echoes on their voices, recorded their voices at different speeds and experimented with music and instruments from other cultures like India. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is a great example!

The Beatles have six songs in the top thirty of Rolling Stones Magazines Top 500 songs ever! Thats twice as many as The Beach Boys and Elvis Presley combined!

In 1970, when the band broke up, many people believed that they made rock and roll music as important as classical music. (Beethoven) They split up because they each wanted to try their own music. They were all very successful.

Fun Fact:

The band released seven albums in the US and UK in 1964, all but three of them charting at #1. Two others peaked at #2!
